In the midst of escalating oil prices, food shortages, and natural calamities, another bit of news has taken the media world by storm - the Pope wears Prada!

Apparently, the Pope likes to wear his hems short revealing red shoes which fashionistas in the know immediately identified as made by Prada.

The Pope has come under fire for this display or extravagance as he was also once seen donning Gucci sunglasses. For more on the Pope's fashion preferences, click here.

What do you think?  Is it ok for the Pope to wear Prada?

The Vatican has neither denied nor confirmed the brand of the Pope's shoes but came to his defense by saying that "The Pope... does not wear Prada, but Christ."

One thing is clear: the Pope desperately needs a new PR team.

OK lang para kay Pope mag Prada. The Popemobile is a Mercedes Benz anyway.

Here's what I see down the line...in an effort to raise funds for whatever causes, the Vatican will eventually open up to the Pope's "discreet" product endorsements. Pope's endorsements at $500 Million anyone?

What can I say? The Pope has good taste.

Those are Prada, no mistake about it! I've seen those in rue d' Verden (Greenhills) and rue d' Bac Baclaran). Christians should rejoice because the Pope is doing what those wise guys in Colorado Springs (Dr. Peter Wagner,et al) call "positive spiritual warfare" - he wears Prada to counterattack the devil who wears Prada (my apologies to Ms. Streep and the movie's producers). Sana, he will also wear barong.

probably sponsored by prada hahahahahaha.

how much do you think his robes cost?

anyway i think they are just making a mountain of a molehill. i know jesus and his disciples wore sandals, but seriously. what he wears (or does not wear) shouldn't be attracting more attention than the things he does....

just imho.

Funny you should mention that. Another controversy surrounding this pope is that he has decided to switch tailors. Apparently, a particular firm, Giarnelli or something, has been making the papal robes for the last 200 years. I guess Pope Benedict, being a fashion maven, finds it old fashioned and has switched to a new tailor. Needless to say, the old firm is scandalized. This is the kind of "big" news circulating in Milan and Paris.

Since the RC's believe that the Pope is of Peter's "papal lineage", maybe the brand is Peterite - which may outsell Samsonite. By the way if his predecessor had his Popemobile, I guess this Pope has his Prado Suv to match his Prada shoes.

Pontifical Product Endorsements

Pastor Michael is right in saying that he needs a good PR team. Pope John Paul II has the natural charisma and needs not to metrostyle himself. He is innately media-savvy and definitely he is one of the world's most photographed public figures.

Aside from Prada Pope Benedict XVI has used the ff brands:

Serengeti Glasses by Bushnell Performance Optics
Geox Uomo Light loffers
pencil thin iPod Nano with the engraving "To His Holiness, Benedict XVI"

Natuzzi leather maker jazzed up the Pope's golf cart -- General Electric Motorcars, a division of DaimlerChrysler AG. With Benedict XVI's planned trips to Spain, Poland and Turkey, Volkswagen AG and BMW AG are both jockeying to replace DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes as the next maker of the popemobile.

BMW also donated a bulletproof X5 SUV to the Vatican, and the car maker says it hopes Benedict XVI will soon make public use of it since the vehicle, like the pope, is "Bavarian-made."

Being associated with the pope is worth at least 100 times more than an A-list celebrity because the pontiff has a more devoted following, he can actually command huge sums of product endorsements discreetly.

I am waiting that for that day when he explicitly endorses Christ boldly.
